Automatic Swing Door Safety Risk Elimination – Clay Farm, Cambridge

During a service at Clay Farm Medical Centre in Cambridge, we highlighted that there were risks with the automatic swing door on the main entrance. We carry out a risk assessment checklist for compliance with BS / EN16005 and BS7036 – 0 which are the regulations and recommendations for risk elimination or risk reduction for all types of automatic doors within the UK.

Following on from this the customer was sent a quotation to reduce the risk by the installation of an external safety barrier. The Barrier was installed to eliminate the risk of impact as a person approaching from the side could walk into an opening door. There are specific requirements for a safety barrier as set out in this extract from BS EN 16005:2012

4.6.10 Barriers
Barriers are intended to direct pedestrian traffic or to avoid pedestrians from entering non-safe zones.
They shall be:
a) designed so that children cannot easily climb over or crawl under them,
b) suitably secured,
c) able to withstand forces occurring in normal service,
d) a minimum of 900 mm high.
e) Barriers, when used, shall not create new hazards.

On completion a new automatic door risk assessment was carried out and the appropriate checklist was issued to the customer.
